IACES Welcomes 44th Annual UACES Conference to Cork

The Department of Government, University College Cork, in partnership with the Centre for Study of a Wider Europe in NUI Maynooth is hosting a major two-day multi-disciplinary conference 'Reflections on Forty Years of Irish Membership of the EU'.  The conference is bringing together leading figures from the worlds of academia, politics, civil society, business and the media to consider Ireland's forty year relationship with the EU. The keynote address: 'A Mixed Blessing? Reflections on Forty Years of Irish Membership of the EU' will be delivered by Professor Desmond Dinan, George Mason University. Other contributors include key political figures who have worked on EU issues including former Government Ministers, Micheal Martin, Dick Spring and Alan Dukes, and a cross-party selection of former MEPs. Senior diplomat Bobby McDonagh (Irish Ambassador to Italy) and Lt Gen Pat Nash (retired) will also be participating. Key business and civil society interests will be represented by David Begg (ICTU) and Pat Ivory (IBEC) and journalists Ann Cahill (Irish Examiner), Paddy Smyth (Irish Times) and Sean Whelan (RTE) will also contribute. Senior academic figures will confront and examine the many political, economic and policy dimensions to Irelandâ??s forty year relationship with the EU. The conference will also mark the re-launch of the Irish Association for Contemporary European Studies (IACES). IACES aims to bring together European Studies scholars and practitioners from across the island of Ireland to foster collaboration, source funding, and disseminate scholarly research on European Integration and membership of the EU. The association will also seek to contribute to future public and political discussion on the question of Irelandâ??s EU membership.
